One person was killed and 18 others were injured on Saturday after a major collision at the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a police official said.
The official explained that a speeding truck had rammed into “at least 20 vehicles”—many of which were said to be luxury cars—after its driver lost control of the vehicle’s brakes on the expressway’s descent, near the Adoshi tunnel at the Raigad district. as per a PTI report.
19 injured civilians were admitted to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai, out of which one woman succumbed to her injuries and died.
“The driver was taken into custody by Khopoli police,” the official added, explaining that he had not been under the influence of alcohol at the time he lost control of the truck.
The expressway—said to be one of India’s busiest with a daily volume upwards of 1.5 lakh vehicles, especially on weekends—was jammed as a result, with videos showing long lines of stranded vehicles near the Datta Food Mall, shortly after the descent from the Lonavala-Khandala ghat section.
Videos doing the rounds on social media show police and emergency teams quickly reaching the spot to help the injured and clear the wreckage. They also diverted traffic to alternate routes to ease the congestion.
The videos also show that a number of cars were badly damaged in the collision, and at least three completely crushed.
Visuals of the devastating wreckage once again highlight the urgent need for stricter monitoring and enhanced safety measures on expressways—especially those in accident-prone ghat sections.
