Then on the request of his mother Uttara, the sage believer stopped the yajna and protected the serpents. The day this happened was the fifth date of Sawan Shukla Paksha. Since then, Nag Panchami started being celebrated on the Panchami Tithi of Sawan Shukla Paksha and the tradition of worshiping the serpents started on this day.

According to another legend, during the sea churning, Vasuki Nag had become a rope and supported the sea churning between the gods and the demons.
