Universal Account Number: The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made a major change for the people registering with them. From August 1, 2025, all new Universal Account Number (UAN) will be created using Aadhaar-based face authentication technology. This process should be completed through the Umang app and there is no need to contact the employer.
EPFO issued a circular on 30 July to confirm this update. Now it is mandatory for most users to generate your UAN through Aadhaar-based face recognition. However, in special cases, such as international employees or citizens of Nepal and Bhutan, the old method, in which the employer helps generate UAN, will still be valid.
Now Aadhaar Face ID compulsory to make UAN
The new system uses face authentication technology (FAT), making this process simple and more secure. This technique obtains the user’s information directly from the base database, which eliminates the need to enter personal details manually. It also ensures that the base details are correct and verified.
Three services under EPFO now use this technology:
- UAN allocation and activation
- Activation of existing UAN
- Face authentication for already active UAN
No need to contact employer to generate UAN
The biggest advantage of the new rule is that employees can now generate and activate UAN themselves. This can be done by downloading the Umang App and Aadhaar Face RD app from the Play Store.
After the UAN is generated, a digital copy of the E-UAN card can also be downloaded. This card can be shared with the employer to join with official objectives and EPFOs.
Who can use the old UAN method?
Although Aadhaar-based face authentication is now the main method, EPFO has created some exceptions. The previous process, in which employers generate UAN on behalf of employees, will still be available for them:
- International employee
- Nepal citizens
- Bhutan citizens
These exceptions are due to the specific legal and practical challenges that these individuals may have to face the base.

To successfully generate your UAN by this new method, you must have the following:
- A valid base number
- OTP access to your Aadhaar mobile number for verification
- Aadhaar Face RD app for facial scanning
After this is ready, the process can be completed in a few minutes using your phone.
Step-by-step guide to generate UAN through Umang app

- 1. Open the Umang app and choose “UAN allocation and activation”.
- 2. Enter your Aadhaar number and mobile number, and mark the consent box for Aadhaar verification.

- 4. On receiving the signal, install the Aadhaar Face RD app.
- 5. The system will check whether your Aadhaar is already linked to UAN or not

- 7. After verification, your information will be obtained and a new UAN will be generated.
- 8. You will get your UAN through SMS on your registered mobile number.

This step of EPFO aims to make the process of generating UAN simple and more secure. Using the base-based face authentication, users no longer need to depend on employers or go to any office. This process is fully digital, fast and available to all people with smartphones and Aadhaar numbers.
Although the chronic system still exists for special cases, for most people it is a more comfortable and user-friendly experience with EPFO services.
