Pilgrimage Begins with Sacred Rituals
Chamba:
On the auspicious occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, thousands of devotees participated in the ‘Chhota Snan’ (initial ceremonial bath) in the glacial waters of Manimahesh Dal Lake as the Manimahesh Yatra commenced in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district early Saturday morning (August 16, 2025). The lake, which offers a stunning view of the Kailash Peak, is revered as the dwelling place of Lord Shiva.
With the resonating chants of “Bam Bam Bhole” echoing through the Pir Panjal ranges, the pilgrimage officially began and is set to continue until Radha Ashtami. Over the next fortnight, lakhs of pilgrims from various parts of the country are anticipated to embark on this challenging journey.
The trek to Manimahesh starts from Bharmour, approximately 80 km from Chamba town. From there, devotees proceed to Hadsar, the starting point of the yatra. The remaining 13-km trek, which ascends to an altitude of 13,500 feet, is a blend of devotion and perseverance. The picturesque yet rugged path tests the physical endurance of the pilgrims, but their spirits remain buoyed by their faith.
Many devotees believe that immersing themselves in the lake's icy waters, along with a view of the cloud-shrouded Manimahesh Kailash peak, purifies the soul and fulfills long-held desires. This pilgrimage is often viewed as a Himalayan alternative to the more demanding Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet.
Chamba's Deputy Commissioner, Mukesh Repaswal, announced that the yatra will continue until August 31. He advised pilgrims to stay updated on weather conditions due to the ongoing monsoon and potential hazards like falling rocks and landslides along the Chamba-Bharmour highway.
To ensure the safety and convenience of the pilgrims, 700 personnel from police, Home Guards, NDRF, and SDRF have been stationed across 13 sectors along the route. Additionally, temporary shelters, medical camps, and community kitchens (langars) have been established to accommodate the influx of visitors.
Helitaxi services are available from both Bharmour and Holi, providing round-trip rides to Gaurikund for Rs 6,500. From Gaurikund, pilgrims will complete the final stretch of their journey on foot.
Each year, between 6 to 7 lakh devotees participate in the Manimahesh Yatra, which is notable not only for its spiritual significance but also for the stunning natural beauty of the glacial lake and the majestic Manimahesh Kailash.
