Mumbai: Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhaiya Dooj, is one of the most cherished Hindu festivals that celebrates the sacred bond between brothers and sisters. Observed every year two days after Diwali, this auspicious occasion symbolises love, protection, and the promise of lifelong care between siblings.

According to the Hindu calendar, Bhai Dooj is marked on the Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. On this day, sisters apply a ceremonial tilak on their brothers’ foreheads and pray for their long life and prosperity, while brothers, in return, give gifts to their sisters as a token of affection. The festival is also known by different names across India, including Bhau Beej, Bhatr Dwitiya, Bhai Dwitiya and Bhataru Dwitiya.

Why Bhai Dooj is Celebrated

In Hindu tradition, Bhai Dooj holds deep spiritual and cultural significance. It is closely linked to the legend of Yamraj, the God of Death, and his sister Yamuna. As per scriptures, Yamraj once visited his sister on this day, and Yamuna welcomed him with warmth, hospitality, and a ceremonial tilak. Pleased by her devotion, Yamraj granted a boon that brothers and sisters who bathe in the Yamuna and observe the rituals of this day would be freed from untimely death.

This is why Yamraj, Yamuna, and even Lord Chitragupta are worshipped on Bhai Dooj, and a holy dip in the Yamuna river is considered especially auspicious. The festival thus symbolises not only the eternal bond of siblings but also prayers for protection, health, and prosperity.
