General Provident Fund: The Government of India has announced the interest rates on General Provident Fund (GPF) and other government provident funds for the quarter from October to December 2025. According to the Finance Ministry, there has been no change in the interest rate for these three months.

The Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) of the Finance Ministry has informed that from 1 October 2025 to 31 December 2025, 7.1% annual interest will be given on the General Provident Fund (GPF). This is the same rate which was applicable in the last quarter also. This means that the government has not made any change in the interest rate.

GPF and PPF interest rates are same

The interest rate of General Provident Fund (GPF) has been kept equal to that of Public Provident Fund (PPF). Currently, interest of 7.1% is also available on PPF. The interest rates of both the schemes are generally the same, although their eligibility is different.

On which funds will the interest rate of 7.1% be applicable?

The government has made it clear that this interest rate of 7.1% will be applicable not only on GPF but also on many other government provident funds. These include:

General Provident Fund (Central Service)
Contributory Provident Fund (India)
All India Service Provident Fund
State Railway Provident Fund
General Provident Fund (Defence Services)
Indian Ordinance Department Provident Fund

What is General Provident Fund (GPF)?

General Provident Fund (GPF) is a savings scheme which is only for central government employees. In this, the employee deposits some part of his salary in the fund every month. This is a type of retirement fund. When the employee retires, he gets back the entire amount deposited by him along with the interest received on it. This scheme provides financial security to employees after retirement.

How are interest rates reviewed?

The Finance Ministry reviews the interest rate on GPF once every quarter i.e. once in 3 months. If deemed necessary, interest rates are changed. But at present the government has kept the interest rate at 7.1% from October to December 2025.
