The temple is famous for the beliefs and unique traditions related to Dwapar era.
Dhanteras, the great festival of worship of Lord Kuber, the presiding deity of wealth and opulence, is being celebrated on 18 October this year. On this auspicious occasion, Kundeshwar Mahadev Temple of Ujjain becomes a center of special attraction for the devotees. Located in the Mahadev complex near Maharishi Sandipani Ashram, this temple preserves a rare and approximately 1100 years old statue of Lord Kuber. It is said that its history is directly related to Dwapar era.
Story of the temple…It is said that when Lord Krishna, Balram and Sudama completed their education from Maharishi Sandipani, Lord Kuber himself appeared here while giving Guru Dakshina. Since then, this four-armed statue of Lord Kuber is installed here in a sitting posture.
Rare Statue: This statue is one of the three main 'seated' statues of Kuber present in the country, which is located at the meeting place of Hari (Krishna) and Har (Shiva).
According to the priests of the temple, there is a unique and very important ritual to please Kubera. Under this rule, lakhs of devotees come to this miraculous temple to have darshan of Kuber ji and to apply ghee and perfume on the navel, so that by his grace their treasures also never become empty.
Perfume-ghee paste: Kuber is the treasurer of the gods. He is very fond of Yaksha and fragrance, hence on the occasion of Dhanteras, perfume mixed with pure ghee is applied on his navel.
Fruit: This tradition is based on the belief that by applying fragrant paste on the navel of Yaksha Kuber, he becomes happy quickly and showers happiness, prosperity and wealth in the homes of the devotees throughout the year.
Quadrilateral Form: In this ancient Chaturbhuj idol, Lord Kuber is holding Soma Patra in one hand and the other hand is in Abhaya Mudra, blessing the devotees. He is carrying an effigy of mongoose skin on his shoulder as a symbol of wealth.
Dear Bhog: Since Kuber ji is fond of yellow colour, yellow sweets and fruits like pomegranate are specially offered to him on this day.
Ritual: A day before Dhanteras, special Abhishek, Havan and worship rituals are organized here.
Shree Yantra: The presence of Shri Yantra on the top of the temple instead of the Rudra Yantra installed in the Shiva temple, shows the uniqueness of this place related to wealth and opulence.
