Why Diesel Car Gives More Mileage: India’s automobile market has always been full of competition and innovation. While electric and petrol cars are in the news, diesel engines are still maintaining their special identity. Diesel cars are still the first choice for those who travel long distances or are conscious about fuel efficiency i.e. mileage.
The biggest feature of diesel engine is its fuel efficiency. It is not only cheaper than petrol but also more effective because of its technical and chemical characteristics. Diesel engine produces more energy with less fuel, making it the most economical option for long journeys.
The biggest difference between diesel and petrol is in their chemical composition. Diesel is a heavy hydrocarbon fuel, containing about 10–15% more energy than petrol. This means that every liter of diesel provides more power. This is the reason why diesel engine requires less fuel for the same performance, due to which its mileage is better.
The compression ratio of a diesel engine ranges from 14:1 to 25:1, while that of a petrol engine ranges only from 9:1 to 12:1. This higher compression increases thermal efficiency i.e. more energy is produced with less fuel. Since the fuel in a diesel engine burns automatically through compression instead of a spark plug, it is more efficient and mileage efficient.
Diesel engines run on a lean-burn system, in which a mixture of more air and less fuel is burned. In contrast, petrol engines restrict air flow causing “pumping losses” and increased fuel consumption. This is the reason why diesel engine gives better mileage even in daily driving.
Diesel engine gives more torque even at low RPM. This means that the vehicle does not need to change gears frequently or press the accelerator. The engine runs at its most efficient speed, saving fuel and keeping the driving smooth.
Even though the market is now moving towards electric and hybrid vehicles, diesel engines continue to retain their place. This is because of – long range, high torque and excellent fuel efficiency. Modern diesel engines have become cleaner, more advanced and more durable than ever before. This is why diesel cars are still the most reliable companions for those who undertake long journeys.
