News India Live, Digital Desk: Often people, while trying to improve their health, make some mistakes which cause huge losses instead of benefits. One such common mistake is consuming citrus fruits with milk. Many people drink orange juice with milk for breakfast or mix milk and citrus fruits together in fruit salad. This combination sounds very healthy, but do you know that from Ayurveda to modern science, both consider this habit as the enemy of health? This is not just a saying, but there are solid scientific reasons behind it. Why is the combination of milk and sour fruits like ‘poison’? 1. Ayurveda’s viewpoint: It is a ‘viruddha diet’. In Ayurveda, the thousands of years old Indian medical system, some food combinations have been called ‘viruddha diet’. This means, such food items, when eaten together, upset the balance of doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) in the body and weaken the digestive fire (Jathragni). Different effects: Milk has a cooling effect and is sweet in taste, while sour fruits (like orange, lemon, pineapple) have a hot effect. When these two things of different nature are mixed together, it has a bad effect on our digestive system. Toxic elements are formed: Due to this wrong combination, the food is not digested properly and starts rotting in the stomach, due to which poisonous elements (ama) start forming in the body. 2. What does science say? Science also confirms this. Milk contains a protein called ‘casein’. When you eat any sour fruit with or immediately after milk, the acid present in the fruit (like citric acid) enters the stomach and curdles the milk. Think, just like you put lemon in milk to make cheese and the milk curdles, the exact same process happens inside your stomach. This curdled milk forms heavy clots in the stomach, which becomes very difficult for our digestive system to digest. This bad habit can cause these problems: Heaviness in the stomach, gas and acidity, Vomiting or indigestion, Allergy, itching or red rashes on the skin, Cold, cough and increase in mucus. Doing this for a long time leads to weakening of the digestive system. What is the solution? According to experts, keep a gap of at least one hour between eating milk and sour fruits. It is very important. If you have drunk milk, eat any sour fruit only after an hour. Similarly, if you have eaten sour fruits, then wait for at least an hour before consuming milk. So next time you drink milk, avoid making this mistake in the name of taste or health. This small precaution can save you from many big health problems.
