To foster interest in research and innovation among schoolchildren, the Ministry of Education has launched another significant initiative. The country's top technical and research institutions, including the IITs, will now invite schoolchildren to their campuses to introduce them to the research and innovation activities underway there. During this visit, parents will also be able to experience the ecosystem of these institutions up close and personal, and assess their commitment to each child.
IIT Madras has launched "Open House 2026" for schoolchildren. This initiative has prompted other IITs and top technical institutions to initiate similar initiatives. IIT Madras has also released its schedule. According to an official notification from IIT Madras, it has opened its campus to the public from January 2nd to 4th, 2026. However, students, parents, and entrepreneurs will need to register in advance.
Under this initiative, other research and technical institutions have been asked to introduce students to their research and innovation activities, including by setting up related stalls. IIT Madras has even decided to open its laboratories and academic campus to school students as part of this initiative. According to senior ministry officials, IIT Madras is taking the lead in this initiative because it has been working on it for the past two years. Therefore, it is moving forward with full preparation.
All top technical institutions have been asked to showcase their activities to students in nearby urban and rural schools, as well as to students across the country who have expressed interest in the institute. This initiative by technical institutions is also being seen as linked to the National New Education Policy (NEP), which recommends that top institutions mentor school children and nurture their talents.
