Authorities have approved a master site plan for an Olympic-standard sports complex to be developed by Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, featuring a 135,000-seat stadium that would become the second-largest in the world.

Planned for a 411-hectare site in Hanoi’s southern part, the complex is designed to meet the requirements for hosting major international events, including the Asian Games and the Olympic Games. In addition to sports venues, the project will include supporting infrastructure such as a hospital and a research center.

At the heart of the development is Trong Dong Stadium, which will occupy more than 73 hectares and accommodate approximately 135,000 spectators.

Currently, the world’s largest stadium is Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in North Korea, with a reported capacity of 150,000 seats, according to International Olympic Committee data. Michigan Stadium ranks next with more than 107,600 seats.

In Vietnam, the largest existing venue is My Dinh National Stadium, which can hold about 40,000 people.

Hanoi’s new sports complex is part of the VND925 trillion (US$38 billion) Olympic Sports Urban Area spanning more than 9,000 hectares.
