A major UK motorway has been closed following a 'police-led incident' - with no current timeframe given for its reopening.


The M6 in Lancashire is shut in both directions between J31 (Preston) and J32 (M55) due to an ongoing incident during the early hours of New Year's Day, Thursday, January 1, The Mirror reports.


A National Highways spokesperson confirmed: "Emergency services including Lancashire Police are in attendance. National Highways are also on scene to assist with traffic management.


"Due to the nature of the incident there is currently no estimated time for reopening."
