In today's time, UPI has made sending money very easy. The transaction is completed in a few seconds, but this speed sometimes becomes a cause of trouble. A small mistake, like choosing the wrong UPI ID or sending money to the wrong account in a hurry, and the money goes to someone else's account. In such a situation, first of all, there is no need to panic, because if you take the right steps at the right time, there is every possibility of getting the money back.

As soon as you suspect a wrong transfer, first of all open the transaction history of your UPI app. Many times payment is pending due to network, in such a situation the money is not deducted directly. If the transaction seems successful, then check its complete details carefully. Every UPI transaction has a unique UTR number, which proves to be very important during further complaints.

Register complaint instantly in UPI app

Most UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm provide the option to lodge a complaint for wrong transaction. Submit a complaint on the option like selecting a transaction and sending money to the wrong person. With this, your problem gets registered in the official system and the investigation process starts.

It is very important to inform the bank

After complaining on UPI app, contact your bank immediately. Call the customer care number or go to the nearest branch and give complete information. The bank will contact the receiver's bank based on the UTR number given by you and request to return the money. However, it is important to keep in mind that the bank cannot forcibly deduct the money without the approval of the receiver.

If you can communicate with the receiver the work becomes easier.

Many times the name of the receiver appears on the UPI app. If possible, try to reach out in a polite manner and explain the transaction in error. Often people show honesty and return the money with consent, due to which the matter gets resolved quickly. If the money is not returned within a few days, complain to the bank's grievance cell. After this, a case can also be registered on NPCI's UPI Grievance Portal. As a last option, the Banking Ombudsman of RBI can be contacted.

How long can it take to get the money back

If the receiver cooperates, the amount can be returned within a few days. But if the matter progresses, it may take two to four weeks or more. The sooner you complain, the better your chances of recovery. While making payment through UPI, always confirm the name visible on the screen. It is wise to do a small trial transaction before sending money to a new account. Instead of typing the UPI ID manually, use the QR code and pause once before entering the PIN.
