Tezzbuzz Desk- With the arrival of cold weather, many people start having problems like swelling, itching and burning sensation in the fingers and toes. Many times the condition becomes such that even doing daily tasks becomes difficult. This problem may seem small, but if not taken care of on time, it can become more painful. Let us know why fingers swell in winter and what are the easy ways to prevent it.

Main reasons for swelling of fingers in winter

Decreased blood circulation due to cold

In cold weather, the body contracts blood vessels to keep itself warm. Due to this, the blood flow in the fingers and toes slows down and fluid starts accumulating in the tissue, which causes swelling.

dehydration

Thirst is less in winter, hence people drink less water. Due to lack of water in the body, the problem of swelling in fingers and toes can also increase.

Problem of Chilblains

Chilblains are a common problem caused by cold and humidity. In this, red, itchy and swollen rashes appear on the fingers. It occurs due to swelling in small blood vessels and is seen more in winter.

Ways to avoid swelling of fingers in winter

Always keep hands and feet dry and warm

Humidity can aggravate the problem of chilblains. After washing hands and feet, dry them thoroughly. While going out, wear gloves, woolen socks and closed shoes so that the cold air does not come directly.

apply moisturizer regularly

The cold air of winter makes the skin dry. To prevent this, apply a good moisturizer on hands and feet 2-3 times a day.

keep yourself hydrated

Even though you may feel less thirsty in the cold, it is very important to drink enough water. Lack of water in the body can increase swelling.

Do not go to a very hot place suddenly

Going directly from a cold to a very hot place changes blood circulation rapidly, which can further increase swelling. Let the body warm up slowly.

When to contact a doctor?

If despite these measures the swelling, itching or burning sensation persists for a long time, or the pain starts increasing, then do not delay and consult a doctor. With timely treatment the problem can be prevented from progressing.
