Makar Sankranti Special Khichdi Recipe



The festival of Makar Sankranti holds great significance for Indians, symbolizing the start of auspicious events in Hindu culture. A cherished tradition is the preparation of khichdi, particularly urad dal khichdi, which is a beloved dish made during festivals like Makar Sankranti.


This dish is not only light and nutritious but also serves as a balanced meal that energizes the body and aids digestion. To enhance the flavor of urad dal khichdi, it is cooked with ghee, spices, and fresh vegetables, making it perfect for anyone seeking a wholesome meal. Below, we present a straightforward recipe for preparing urad dal khichdi, ideal for the Makar Sankranti celebration.


Ingredients for Urad Dal Khichdi:
1 cup urad dal
1/2 cup rice
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon asafoetida
1 green chili (chopped)
1 tablespoon ghee
1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
Salt to taste
4 cups water


Preparation Method:


Begin by thoroughly washing the urad dal and rice. Soak them for 15-20 minutes to facilitate quicker cooking. Next, heat ghee in a pan, adding cumin seeds and asafoetida. Once the cumin seeds begin to splutter, incorporate ginger and green chili, sautéing them well.


Add turmeric powder and salt, mixing thoroughly. Then, introduce the soaked urad dal and rice, sautéing for an additional 2-3 minutes. Pour in 4 cups of water, cover the pan, and allow it to boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let the khichdi simmer for 15-20 minutes. When the lentils and rice are cooked to a porridge-like consistency, garnish with ghee and serve with fresh coriander. A dollop of clarified butter (ghee) on top will elevate the khichdi's flavor.
