New Delhi: NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam on Wednesday said that India should hope to be $8-10 trillion export economy by 2047. He made the comments while releasing the fourth edition of the Export Preparedness Index.

Dr Arvind Virmani of NITI Aayog said that Aatmanirbhar Bharat is about competitiveness and called for improvements with proper measurement.

“Aatmanirbhar Bharat is about competitiveness, which includes both cost and quality, and not protection of high-cost or shoddy goods,” he was quoted by CNBC-TV18.

NITI Aayog’s export preparedness index

NITI Aayog released the Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024, a comprehensive assessment of export readiness across India’s States and Union Territories (UTs).  The Index recognises the diversity of subnational economic structures and their critical role in advancing India’s global trade ambitions. The first edition of the EPI was published in August 2020 and this is the 4th edition, Niti Aayog said in its official release.

Maharashtra secured the top rank, while Tamil Nadu and Gujarat were positioned second and third respectively in the Niti Aayog’s fourth Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024.

Among smaller states, Uttarakhand was at the first place, followed by Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Goa, and Tripura.

“For states, this means fostering ecosystems that can respond to new opportunities, align with global standards, and build competitiveness across districts,” Subrahmanyam said.

“Aligned with India’s objective of achieving USD 1 trillion in merchandise exports by 2030 and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, the Export Preparedness Index provides an evidence-based framework to evaluate the strength, resilience, and inclusiveness of subnational export ecosystems. The Index identifies key structural challenges, growth levers, and policy opportunities for enhancing export competitiveness at the State and district levels,” Niti Aayog mentioned in its official release.
