People believe that FASTag is only blacklisted when the balance runs out, but the reality is that there can be many other reasons. Most of these reasons are related to small mistakes made by the driver.

To make travel easier by allowing passage through toll plazas without stopping, FASTag has now become mandatory for almost every vehicle. However, sometimes drivers suddenly find out at the toll booth that their FASTag has been blacklisted. In such a situation, simply having a FASTag does not grant permission to pass through the toll; instead, they may have to pay the toll in cash along with an extra charge.

Often, people believe that FASTag is only blacklisted when the balance runs out, but the reality is that there can be many other reasons. Most of these reasons are related to small mistakes made by the driver, which are sometimes unintentional. Therefore, it is important to know why FASTag gets blacklisted and how to avoid these problems. So, let's tell you about the reasons other than low balance that can get your FASTag blacklisted, and whether you are making the same mistakes.

What does it mean when a FASTag is blacklisted?

When a FASTag is blacklisted, it is temporarily deactivated. This means that toll payments cannot be made using that FASTag. This condition, indicated by the National Payments Corporation of India or the bank that issued the FASTag, signifies that there is a problem with the account that needs to be fixed. Traveling through a toll plaza with a blacklisted FASTag can often be very troublesome.

What are the reasons why FASTag gets blacklisted?

Insufficient balance in the account

The most common reason for a FASTag being blacklisted is a low balance in the wallet. Sometimes, if the account does not have the minimum required balance and you continuously cross tolls, the system may blacklist the tag. Many people think they can recharge later, but doing so can lead to the tag being blocked immediately.

Due to incomplete or outdated KYC

According to NHAI rules, it is mandatory to complete the KYC for the FASTag account. If the KYC is incomplete or has expired, the bank or service provider can blacklist the FASTag. This is a major reason why FASTags get blacklisted, and many people overlook it.

More than one FASTag on the same vehicle

According to the "One Vehicle, One FASTag" rule, there should only be one FASTag per vehicle. Sometimes people get a new FASTag but don't deactivate the old one. In such cases, the system gets confused about the vehicle number, and the FASTag can be blacklisted.

FASTag for the wrong vehicle category

Each FASTag is issued for a specific vehicle category, such as a car, SUV, or commercial vehicle. If a FASTag issued for a car is used on a vehicle of a different category, it is considered a violation of the rules. In such cases, the FASTag can also be blacklisted.

Blacklisting due to tampering with the FASTag

Removing a FASTag from one vehicle and attaching it to another, tampering with the FASTag, or sticking it in the wrong place can also lead to blacklisting. Additionally, if the FASTag is damaged, torn, or the scanner cannot read it, the system may temporarily block it.
