Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart has arrived on Netflix with the standalone documentary exploring the abduction and its appalling consequences in detail, reports the Mirror.

Netflix has unveiled its newest true crime offering, Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart, which centres on when the 14 year old was snatched from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the night.

The sole witness to the kidnapping was her nine year old sister Mary Katherine Smart who feigned sleep whilst observing her sister being abducted.

Mary Katherine originally informed police that the man's voice seemed "familiar" but it wasn't until nine months afterwards that she recognised it belonged to someone called "Emmanuel" who had assisted with work at the Smart family home the previous year.

This crucial detail enabled officers to locate the man, whose actual name was Brian David Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee, resulting in Elizabeth Smart's rescue.

Since her sister's abduction became worldwide headlines, Mary Katherine Smart has largely remained away from public attention and maintains a private Instagram profile.

Nevertheless, she did make an uncommon appearance on NewsNation's Banfield three years ago to provide guidance to the families of the University of Idaho murder victims. It was during this interview that Mary Katherine disclosed that she currently serves as a special education teacher.

She said: "I'm a private person, so I'm not going to share too much, but I've tried to find things I enjoy, such as teaching. I love working with kids. I love behaviour. I recently got my master's in applied behaviour analysis, so I'm just working towards becoming a licensed BCBA (Board Certified Behaviour Analyst) and just trying to fully immerse myself in that and just trying to enjoy life."

Mary Katherine continued: "Time is a big thing. As time moves on, things get better, and you learn how to cope. You learn how to deal with people.

"You learn how to deal with situations. I think finding your own identity and what makes you you ... I struggled with the label of being 'the younger sister'. "I'm constantly trying to prove that I'm more than the little sister. I have a lot more to offer. It's not going to be an easy process."

Mary Katherine wed her husband John Paul O'Brien in Salt Lake City back in 2020, though it remains unclear whether the couple have any children.
