*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Free Bert's Season 1 finale*.

The conclusion of one of Netflix's most-watched new programmes paves the way for a potential second series as viewers speculate whether it will be renewed for further episodes.

Every episode of Free Bert only dropped last week but it has swiftly emerged as one of the platform's popular titles amongst subscribers. At the time of writing, it currently sits sixth in the UK's top 10 most-watched series.

This represents quite an accomplishment given it's competing against crime thrillers His and Hers alongside Agatha Christie's Seven Dials and the latest Harlan Coben adaptation Run Away.

Viewers have even confessed they've binged the 'chaotic' six-part comedy series in remarkable time.

Numerous fans claim they've managed to consume the entire debut series in a single sitting. It is co-created and stars comedian Bert Kreischer, reports the Mirror.

For the uninitiated, Kreischer is an accomplished comedian with nearly half a dozen stand-up specials also available on Netflix.

But will the series be returning for a Season 2? Here's what we know so far.

Will there be a Season 2 of Free Bert?

Netflix has yet to confirm whether or not they've commissioned a second series of Free Bert or if it's been axed after just one run. However, Bert Kreischer's recent update could offer fans hope.

Days following its Netflix launch, the comedian posted a video message to fans expressing his gratitude for their support. In his heartfelt statement, he revealed: "I just want to take two seconds and thank everyone who tuned in to Free Bert on its premiere night on Netflix. I woke up this morning with a text saying it was trending at number two (in the US) and I was overwhelmed. I can't tell you how emotional I got in my bed."

He went on: "I've released specials and this is a total different beast. This is acting, producing, my wife helped work on it and I'm out of my comfort zone and a sitcom has always been my great white whale.

"Thank you to the cast who did such a great job. Thank you to the producers, the writers but more importantly thank you to everyone who texted me and DM'd me and shared it on socials. I counted 150 texts and I've been overwhelmed with gratitude. And if you like the show share it with someone."

Kreischer's positive attitude and continued encouragement for viewers to promote the series indicates that Netflix hasn't yet reached a verdict. Devoted fans understand the streaming giant is more inclined to greenlight a second series for programmes that generate buzz, get shared widely and maintain their trending status.

Whilst Netflix remains undecided, the first season's conclusion certainly paves the way for the narrative to continue. The closing episode revolves around the Mr and Miss Barklidge ceremony.

Following the prize presentation and Bert's grand address, security personnel eventually escort him from the premises. Yet just as he approaches the exit, an individual intercepts him and offers an introduction.

The person claims to be Gene Magnussen and states they "have a lot to discuss". The scene then cuts straight to the closing credits.

Magnussen was naturally the moniker of the enigmatic former associate of Bert's new companions. The breakdown of that particular friendship remains cloaked in secrecy.

This suggests any follow-up series might centre on Gene, potentially unveiling the true events that transpired.
