Railway Rules for Middle Berth: There's often confusion regarding the middle berth during train travel. Learn about the railway's prescribed timings and when opening the seat is considered against the rules.

Millions of people travel by train every day in the country. Whether long-distance or short-distance, Indian Railways remains the lifeline for the common man. Therefore, following the rules is essential for a comfortable journey. However, confusion and debate often arise regarding the middle berth.

Indian Railways transports millions of passengers from one city to another every day. Clear rules have been established from time to time for passenger convenience. One important rule relates to the use of the middle berth, which every passenger needs to know.

It's often seen during travel that some passengers want to sleep while others want to sit. Disputes, especially regarding the lower and middle berths, escalate. Due to lack of proper information, even small matters can escalate into arguments.

According to railway rules, the sleeping time in reserved coaches is from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. This means that passengers in the middle berth can open their seats after 10:00 pm and sleep comfortably.

If a passenger in the middle berth wants to sleep after 10:00 pm, passengers in the lower berths cannot refuse. This is considered the official rest time. All passengers are expected to respect this time.

However, after 6:00 am, it is mandatory to close the middle berth so that passengers in the lower berths can rest comfortably. Leaving the middle berth open during the day is against the rules and may cause inconvenience to other passengers.

If a passenger opens the middle berth before 10:00 pm, the passenger in the lower berth can stop them. If necessary, a complaint can also be lodged with the TT. Therefore, it is wise to understand the rules during your journey to ensure a comfortable journey.
