Is It Safe to Reuse Towels? We use towels every day. This begs the question: how often should we clean them and replace them?

How often should you change your towel?

How Often Should You Change Your Bath Towel? Most of us don't wash household linens like sheets, pillowcases, or towels as often as experts recommend. We often think, "It's clean now, it'll last another day or two." But this practice, especially with towels, is hygienically unhealthy. Research shows that towels should be washed more regularly than we think. Let us tell you how often a towel should be changed.

What is the problem with this?

According to a report by Towelsupercenter, many people believe that after bathing or washing hands, the body is clean, so the towel must be clean as well. The reality is a little different. When you wipe your body or hands with a wet towel, moisture, dead skin cells, oil, and dirt get trapped in its fibers. The towel absorbs water, but takes hours to dry. This moist environment is perfect for the growth of microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and yeast. These are invisible to the eye, but over time, their numbers can increase and increase the risk of skin infections, acne, or problems like athlete's foot.

When should the towel be washed?

The good news is that it's not necessary to wash a towel after every use. Experts suggest that under normal circumstances, a bath towel should be washed after about 3 to 4 uses. Hand towels should be washed more frequently, as hands are wiped multiple times throughout the day. However, in some situations, it's better to wash a towel after just one use, such as when someone in the house is sick, a towel is used at the gym, a towel has body fluids on it, or if the person has very sensitive skin. The location of the towel is also important. If the bathroom is humid and poorly ventilated, and the towel doesn't dry properly, it should be washed frequently. The material also makes a difference. Microfiber towels dry quickly, while cotton towels retain more moisture and require regular washing. Bamboo towels are considered antibacterial, but these, too, need to be washed periodically.

In how many days should it be changed?

According to expert Jennifer Adams, it's generally recommended to replace bath towels every two to three years. A maximum of five years is considered optimal. Frequent washing and general use can reduce towels' water-absorbing capacity, leaving them less soft. To keep your towels looking their best for longer, limit your use of fabric softeners. Softeners can leave a film on the fabric, reducing its absorbency.
