New Zealand keeper-batter Tim Seifert copped a blow to his face during the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final against South Africa on March 4, Wednesday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In a video surfaced on social media, the ball had hit the temple of Seifert’s face after the keeper’s gloves, followed by the inside of his left shoulder.

The incident occurred in the final over of the powerplay sent down by Lockie Ferguson. With the right-arm speedster bowling a short ball outside off-stump, South African captain Aiden Markram danced down the track but couldn’t connect the cover drive on the backfoot. The physio had to step into the ground to do a concussion check and Sefiert was good to carry on.

Regular wickets leave South Africa stifled at the Eden Gardens

Having opted to field first in the knockout clash, Black Caps skipper Mitchell Santner has marshalled his resources exceptionally well. The left-arm spinner brought all-rounder Cole McConchie only in the second over and it yielded rich rewards. McConchie went on to pick back-to-back wickets in Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton. Although Aiden Markram was dropped by Rachin Ravindra when he was on 3, the right-hander made only 18 runs. It was Rachin itself dismissing him in the eighth over of the innings.

Experienced campaigner David Miller was dropped by Glenn Phillips in the ninth over of the innings but perished five deliveries later. Dewald Brevis, who was on 34, was the next to depart in the following over of the innings to James Neesham, pushing the Proteas deeper into the hole. At the time of the writing this, Marco Jansen and Tristan Stubbs were doing their best to get their side to a position of strength.
