Antonin Kinsky should probably avoid researching the name Loris Karius if he still harbours hopes of reviving his Tottenham career.

The young Czech was substituted after just 17 minutes in a nightmare performance in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid.Spurs interim head coach Igor Tudor made the bold call to hand Kinsky his first start since October for their last-16 first leg at Riyadh Air Metropolitano - and it backfired spectacularly.

The 22-year-old's opportunity to impress turned into a horror show after he slipped to allow Marcos Llorente to score after six minutes. He conceded again in the 14th minute and, less than two minutes later, his scuffed kick allowed Julian Alvarez to walk the ball into the empty net.

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero walked over to Tudor before Atletico could kick off again, and Kinsky's number was held up for the fourth official moments later, with usual first-choice Guglielmo Vicario introduced. Romero and Kevin Danso hugged Kinsky as he left the pitch before the beleaguered stopper walked straight down the tunnel.

With Spurs in the midst of a relegation battle, it is hard to see Kinsky playing again this season. He may even have played his last game for the club.

That was the fate that befell Karius following his pair of disastrous errors while playing for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid, whose other came courtesy of Gareth Bale's outrageous overhead kick. It was later revealed that he had suffered a concussion following a collision with Sergio Ramos shortly before the mistakes occurred.

Karius had actually played a significant role in the Reds' season, appearing in 33 games across all competitions. But there was no coming back from his Kyiv horror show, especially following the arrival of Alisson Becker that summer.

Despite figuring in some pre-season games and getting a supportive reaction from Liverpool fans, Karius never played for the club in a competitive game again, spending the next two seasons out on loan at Besiktas before joining Union Berlin, also on loan.

He eventually severed ties with Liverpool completely in 2022 by joining Newcastle, where he had to settle for being third-choice keeper. However, in a bizarre quirk of fate, he got to play in another cup final.

With Nick Pope injured and Martin Dubravka cup-tied, Magpies boss Eddie Howe had no choice but to turn to Karius for the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Manchester United. Newcastle lost 2-0, but Karius, who wasn't at fault for either goal, could hold his head high.

Now 32, Karius could be celebrating at the end of the season. Having joined fallen German giants Schalke permanently in January 2025, he is first-choice of a team sitting top of Bundesliga 2, although he is currently recovering from a back injury.

Given the length of the average goalkeeper's career, there's every chance Kinsky will recover from his Madrid meltdown. It just may not be at Tottenham.
