With global energy supply disruptions and rising concerns over cooking gas availability, many households in India are becoming more cautious about how quickly their LPG cylinders get used up. Recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia have also affected global fuel supply chains, which has indirectly increased concerns about LPG availability in India.

In this situation, understanding how much LPG a gas stove consumes per hour can help households plan their usage better and avoid the inconvenience of suddenly running out of gas. Knowing the average consumption rate also helps in timely cylinder booking and efficient gas usage in the kitchen.

LPG Cylinder Size Used in India

In India, the most common LPG cylinder used for domestic cooking purposes weighs 14.2 kilograms. This is the standard household cylinder supplied by oil marketing companies across the country.

For commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants, larger cylinders are typically used, including:

  • 17 kg LPG cylinders

  • 21 kg LPG cylinders

These larger cylinders are designed to meet the higher fuel demand in commercial kitchens.

Energy Value of LPG

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) has a high energy content. On average, 1 kilogram of LPG contains about 46.1 megajoules (MJ) of energy.

This energy value is used to estimate how much gas an appliance consumes in a given period. Most gas-powered appliances come with a rating mentioned in kilowatts (kW) or megajoules per hour (MJ/hr).

How to Calculate LPG Consumption

To estimate LPG usage, you can follow a simple calculation method.

Step 1: Check the Appliance Rating

Gas appliances usually display their energy rating in kW (kilowatts).

Step 2: Convert kW to MJ/hr

To convert kilowatts into megajoules per hour, multiply the value by 3.6.

For example:

If a gas appliance has a rating of 5 kW, the calculation will be:

5 × 3.6 = 18 MJ/hr

Step 3: Calculate Gas Consumption

Now divide the energy consumption by LPG’s energy value (46.1 MJ).

18 ÷ 46.1 = 0.39 kg of LPG per hour

This means the appliance consumes approximately 0.39 kilograms of LPG in one hour.

Step 4: Estimate Cylinder Duration

To calculate how long a cylinder will last, divide the total gas weight by hourly consumption.

For example:

14.2 kg ÷ 0.39 kg ≈ 36 hours of continuous usage

This means a cylinder could theoretically last around 36 hours if the appliance runs continuously.

LPG Consumption While Cooking

Cooking gas consumption depends heavily on the number of burners being used and the intensity of the flame.

In a standard two-burner gas stove, one burner typically consumes about 7 MJ per hour.

If both burners are used simultaneously, the consumption becomes roughly 14 MJ per hour.

Based on this calculation:

  • LPG consumption becomes approximately 0.30 kg per hour when both burners operate together.

With this rate, a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder could last about 46 hours of continuous cooking.

However, in real household usage, cooking usually takes place for only a few hours daily, so a cylinder typically lasts several weeks depending on the family’s cooking habits.

Which Burner Is More Efficient?

Most households use two or three burner gas stoves, but from an energy-saving perspective, using a single burner whenever possible is more efficient.

Larger burners usually consume more gas compared to smaller burners. Therefore, using the smaller burner for everyday cooking tasks can help reduce LPG consumption.

Tips to Save LPG in the Kitchen

Efficient cooking habits can significantly reduce gas usage. Here are some practical tips to save LPG:

  • Keep utensils covered with lids while cooking to retain heat.

  • Soak grains and lentils before cooking to reduce cooking time.

  • Cook on a low flame whenever possible, and use high flame only when necessary.

  • Clean burners regularly so that the gas burns efficiently.

  • Choose energy-efficient gas stoves and burners.

By understanding LPG consumption patterns and adopting efficient cooking practices, households can extend the life of their gas cylinders and reduce fuel expenses while maintaining a smooth cooking routine.
