WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Outlander season 8, episode 2.

Outlander delivered a devastating blow at Fraser's Ridge this week with a significant loss.

Season eight, episode two titled Prophecies saw Claire (played by Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) attempting to rebuild their lives after receiving warnings about trusting Captain Charles Cunningham (Kieran Bew), reports the Daily Record.

Meanwhile, William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart) was investigating his cousin Ben Grey's death as evidence suggested he might still be alive.

However, many Outlander viewers are intrigued by the tragedy at the ridge and the character at the heart of the devastating storyline: Amy.

Here's a look at the character and her background in Outlander.

Amy McCallum (played by Joanne Thomson) first appeared in Outlander during season six as one of the residents living on Fraser's Ridge.

She featured across four episodes in the sixth series as one of the individuals who had travelled from the Highlands to the New World, but experienced tragedy after her husband's death.

She became a widow with two sons to care for.

In the books, Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) attempted to assist Amy by finding her employment, though this sparked false rumours about an affair.

However, she ultimately remarried Bobby Higgins and the pair appeared extremely content. Tragically, as portrayed in both the eighth series and Diana Gabaldon's ninth Outlander novel Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, Amy was fatally attacked by a bear whilst collecting berries alongside Brianna MacKenzie (Sophie Skelton) and fellow women.

Despite Claire's attempts to save Amy, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving behind her husband and two sons.

Amy is portrayed by Scottish actress, writer and director Joanne Thomson, who originates from Glasgow.

She trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, which counts numerous Outlander cast members amongst its alumni, including Heughan.

The performer also undertook training at Groundlings Improv School in Los Angeles and the National Film and Television School through John Yorke's TV Writer's Academy, according to her IMDb profile.

Thomson has appeared in countless television programmes and films, including BBC's Shetland, The Victim, In Plain Sight with Line of Duty's Martin Compston.

Her film credits include shorts Shrapnel, In the Room, Glenrothan, Mouth and Kill.

Meanwhile, Thomson has graced the stage in productions at the National Theatre of Scotland, Bristol Old Vic, Citizens Theatre, Birmingham Rep, Royal Lyceum, amongst other venues.

Outlander season 8 airs on Starz in the USA on Fridays and on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK on Saturdays
