Is an EPF pension hike now imminent? A key parliamentary committee has categorically stated that it is difficult to make ends meet on a monthly pension of ₹1,000, and that this amount must be increased immediately.

On Tuesday, the Parliamentary Standing Committee recommended a review of the minimum pension provided under the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS-95).

The committee explicitly stated that the current monthly pension of ₹1,000 is entirely insufficient to sustain a dignified life.

What is the demand regarding the pension hike?
This recommendation comes at a time when pensioners across the country are demanding that the pension be raised to ₹7,500 per month. In pursuit of this very demand, EPS-95 pensioners also staged a three-day protest at Jantar Mantar starting March 9.

This parliamentary committee—which deals with Labor, Textiles, and Skill Development—stated in its 15th Report (Demands for Grants 2026-27) that:

Inflation is constantly on the rise, yet the pension amount has not been increased for a long time. The committee noted that it has received complaints from numerous pensioners—particularly the elderly and the economically vulnerable—stating that even necessities cannot be met with a sum of ₹1,000.

What did the report mention regarding the EPFO?
The report also pointed out that the government already provides financial assistance to this scheme. This includes a 1.16% contribution towards the accounts of active EPF members, as well as budgetary support to ensure a minimum pension of ₹1,000.

However, the committee believes that, given the current circumstances—specifically inflation, medical expenses, and the rising cost of daily living—this amount is completely inadequate.

What suggestions did the committee offer?
The committee has recommended to the Ministry of Labor and Employment that a "prompt and comprehensive review" of the minimum pension under EPS-95 be undertaken, so that it may be increased to a dignified level in line with current times. Furthermore, the committee stated that the government should explore options to increase budgetary support for this scheme, thereby ensuring better social security and financial stability for pensioners.

Issue of Contract Workers Also Raised

Another significant issue raised in the report concerns contract workers. The committee observed that many contract workers perform duties similar to those of regular employees; however, they often face delays in receiving compensation and relief in the event of an accident.

In this regard, the committee recommended that such workers be brought under the coverage of schemes like EPF and ESI promptly, and that the compensation disbursement process be expedited.

Additionally, the Central and State governments have been urged to establish a mechanism to monitor compliance with these regulations and ensure timely payments.

Overall, the stance adopted by the Parliamentary Committee serves as a clear indication that, in the near future, the government may have to take a major decision regarding the enhancement of EPF pensions—a move that could bring relief to millions of retired employees.
