There was an argument to give Shim Mheuka and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen some minutes from the bench given the game state but Rosenior chose not to. The head coach also decided not to use Estevao Willian, who had returned to the squad after more than a month out with a hamstring injury.

In a night that delivered very little in terms of positives from a Chelsea perspective, that can surely be seen as good news. The 18-year-old Brazilian, who became an instant fan favourite in the early stages of his debut season at Stamford Bridge, will now have a few extra days of training with his teammates before the trip to Merseyside at the weekend. That is certainly a boost for Rosenior, whose attack has looked blunt in the last two games especially.

Over the last 180 (not including stoppage time) minutes, Chelsea have registered 40 shots, 11 of them being on target, but have not scored a single goal. While Estevao, a teenager, cannot be relied on to be Chelsea's solution, having him available is a huge positive.
