Gas Connection New Policy: The government has implemented a new rule saying that where PNG facility is available, the LPG connection can be closed after 3 months if the consumer does not take PNG. However, LPG may continue if PNG is not possible due to technical reasons.

LPG Cylinder News Update: If you also use LPG for cooking gas, then this news is very important for you. The central government has made the rules regarding gas supply very strict. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a new order, under which LPG connections of lakhs of consumers may be closed in the coming 3 months. After all, why did the government take this decision and what will you have to do to save your connection, let us understand in detail.

Why will your LPG connection be disconnected?

The government has notified the 'Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026'. According to this new rule, consumers in areas where Piped Natural Gas (PNG) facility is available will now have to compulsorily switch to PNG. If the pipeline has been laid in your area and you still do not take PNG connection, your LPG supply will be stopped within the next 3 months. The ministry aims to strengthen energy security and balance gas dependence amid global crises.

90 day deadline and 'no-objection' rule

In this order issued on March 24, 2026, it is clearly stated that the oil companies (OMCs) will stop the delivery of gas cylinders after 90 days of notice given to the families who will not adopt it despite the availability of PNG. However, there is a point of relief in this also. Those houses where laying of pipeline is not possible due to technical reasons will be given 'No-Objection Certificate' (NOC). As long as the NOC remains effective, their LPG connection will remain secure, but once the technical problem is resolved, they will also have to shift to PNG.

Infrastructure gets super power and 48 hours service

In order to expand the pipeline network rapidly, the government has kept it under the purview of 'Essential Commodities Act'. Now housing societies and other authorities will have to give permission for laying pipelines within just 3 days. If they do not grant permission, it will be treated as 'deemed approval'. Not only this, it has been made mandatory to provide 'last-mile' PNG connectivity to the consumer within just 48 hours of application. Oil Secretary Neeraj Mittal has described this as a step to 'convert crisis into opportunity'.

Why was this tough decision taken?

At present, the availability of gas is being affected due to the ongoing tension in the Middle East and disruptions in the global supply chain. The government wants to reduce the burden of LPG cylinders in areas where the pipeline can reach. The cylinders saved from this can be sent to remote rural areas where it is not yet possible to reach through pipelines. This step has been taken to protect the energy security of the country from future crises.
