Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) suffered a massive outage on Thursday, affecting thousands of users around the world. This caused frustration among those who depend on the platform for real-time news, communications and updates.
The outage started around 12:20 pm Indian Standard Time (IST). Users in the **United States**, **United Kingdom**, **India**, and several other countries reported difficulties with feeds loading (often resulting in timelines appearing blank), logging into accounts, posting content, and refreshing the platform. Both the mobile app and desktop website were affected by the outage. Outage tracking site **Downdetector** reported a sudden spike in complaints, reaching a peak of **30,000–34,000 reports** in the US, and thousands more from the UK (over 10,000), India (about 1,800+), and Europe. About 50% of the issues were to the feed/timeline, 41% to the app, and the rest to website access.
The exact cause of the outage is not yet known. Such outages are typically associated with server-side problems or temporary infrastructure glitches. No evidence suggested that this was caused by any country-level blocking or external attacks.
This is not the first outage for X in recent months. The platform has repeatedly faced stability issues, raising questions about its reliability during peak hours.
Many users expressed their displeasure; One user reported that they were doing some work when their feed went blank and their work was interrupted. Other users turned to other platforms to check if the service had been shut down worldwide. Service began to be partially restored for some users after 2pm IST, and reports dropped significantly in most areas within an hour.
Although services have mostly been restored, the incident highlights the persistent challenges facing large social media platforms. Users who are still experiencing issues are advised to refresh the app, clear the cache, or restart their device. X has not yet issued any official statement on this outage.
