Viewers have been left stunned after discovering the identity of the murderer in Netflix's new series, Detective Hole.

Netflix recently released its nine-part crime drama Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole to global audiences, with many already binge-watching the series and eagerly anticipating news of a potential second season, reports the Mirror.

The brutal and intense programme is adapted from renowned author Nesbø's globally celebrated Harry Hole novels.

Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole draws inspiration from his fifth novel The Devil's Star, let's delve into who the murderer was in the series.

Theatre director Willy Barli (portrayed by Frank Kjosås) was revealed as the murderer after detective Harry Hole (Tobias Santelmann) initially overlooked him during the investigation into his wife, Lisbeth's disappearance.

Barli murdered his wife after discovering her affair with smuggler Martin Amanov (Simon J. Berger) during their honeymoon.

In a cold-hearted act, Barli concealed her body within his waterbed to keep her "close".

However, he also sought retribution against Amanov for his betrayal and devised an intricate scheme.

He enlisted the oblivious smuggler to transport rare red gemstones, fashioned into stars from Prague to Oslo approximately every five days.

On each of these days, Barli committed a murder to coincide with Amanov's visits.

He instructed the unsuspecting smuggler to deliver the gems to a specific location at a designated time.

This consequently implicated Amanov and left him without an alibi for the time of the murders.

Barli escalated matters by incorporating ritualistic elements into the murders, as well as leaving eerie cassette recordings and star gems at the crime scenes.

The director had orchestrated all of this to create the illusion of a serial killer on the loose.

Initially, this strategy was successful. Harry even stated that in most instances the husband is the murderer, but Barli wasn't as there was an individual at large murdering multiple people.

Barli initially succeeded in framing Amanov, however, Harry managed to exonerate him after realising the smuggler hadn't committed the crimes.

Despite Harry confronting Barli, the director ended his own life by leaping from a window and impaling himself on a washing stand rod.

In addition to solving the case, Harry also unmasked his corrupt colleague Tom Waaler (Joel Kinnaman) once and for all as the arms dealer 'The Prince', who had been peddling illegal firearms on the streets of Oslo.

Regrettably, during a tussle between Waaler and Harry, the dishonest detective met a gruesome end involving a lift.

Nevertheless, Harry resumed his role to crack more cases.
