Thousands of Brits have been warned they will hear sirens blaring off today due to a routine test being carried out at a site in Scotland.

Residents living in the north east city of Glasgow in Scotland are likely to hear the loud sirens as a part of a routine test being carried out by a nearby gas works site. The alarm will ring at 10am on Thursday (April 9) morning will last for an hour. SGN, a gas networking company will carry out the alarm trial at its Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) site on Blochairn Road in Provan. During the trial, 'warning' and 'all-clear' sirens will be activated a number of times, the firm said.

SGN spokesperson Dan Brown said: "We carry out these tests every six months because the safety of the Provan community is really important to us.

"While the test scheduled at 10am on Thursday 9 April is routine and nothing to be concerned about, it's important nearby residents and businesses are familiar with the sound of the siren and know what they need to do in case a real incident ever takes place."

The firm conducts this exercise every six months and the residents and businesses are notified in advance.

The test is a requirement as part of the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 2015.
