Hugh Jackman Takes on a New Role in The Sheep Detectives

Hugh Jackman, celebrated for his legendary role as Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men directed by Bryan Singer, has an impressive array of films to his credit. His performances span various genres, including Christopher Nolan's psychological thriller The Prestige, Shawn Levy's sci-fi action flick Real Steel, Denis Villeneuve's intense drama Prisoners, and the musical The Greatest Showman directed by Michael Gracey. After his last theatrical venture, the biographical musical Song Sung Blue featuring Kate Hudson, Jackman is gearing up for his next project, The Sheep Detectives. This mystery-comedy is adapted from Leonie Swann's 2005 novel, Three Bags Full, with a screenplay by Craig Mazin, known for his acclaimed series Chernobyl, and directed by Kyle Balda, famous for his work on Minions. The film is set to premiere in theaters on May 8, 2026.

According to recent projections from Box Office Pro, The Sheep Detectives is expected to generate between $10 million and $20 million during its opening weekend in North America. To gauge its potential success, it’s useful to compare these estimates with the earnings of Song Sung Blue. Box Office Mojo reports that Song Sung Blue debuted with $7.1 million domestically and went on to earn a total of $57.9 million globally, achieving a multiplier of 8.15x from its domestic opening to worldwide earnings.

For The Sheep Detectives to exceed the global earnings of Song Sung Blue, it needs to gross at least $57.9 million worldwide. If it follows a similar box office trajectory as its predecessor, applying the same multiplier, it could potentially earn between $81.5 million and $163 million globally. However, these projections are speculative, as the film's actual success will depend on a strong opening weekend, solid international sales, and positive audience feedback.

The storyline of The Sheep Detectives revolves around a shepherd, portrayed by Jackman, who entertains his sheep by narrating detective stories each night, convinced they are unaware of the plots. However, their peaceful farm life is disrupted by an unforeseen event, leading the sheep to take matters into their own hooves. They embark on a quest to solve the mystery, following clues and questioning human suspects.

As the release date approaches, both industry experts and fans are keen to see how The Sheep Detectives will fare at the box office. The true measure of its success will only be known after its debut on May 8, 2026, making it a highly awaited addition to Jackman's impressive filmography.
