An ulcer is a sore or open lesion that develops on the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or other parts of the digestive tract. The most common type is a peptic ulcer, which includes gastric ulcers (in the stomach) and duodenal ulcers (in the upper part of the small intestine). These ulcers form when the protective lining of the digestive system gets damaged, allowing stomach acid to irritate and erode the tissue.

Ulcers are often caused by infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, prolonged use of pain-relieving medications like NSAIDs, excessive acid production, stress, or unhealthy eating habits. Common symptoms include a burning stomach pain, bloating, heartburn, nausea, and discomfort that may worsen on an empty stomach.

Although ulcers can be painful and uncomfortable, they are treatable with proper care, lifestyle changes, and medication when needed. Early attention and a balanced diet can help prevent complications and promote faster healing.
