A routine late-night flight from Denver turned deadly when a Frontier Airlines plane, set to depart for Los Angeles, collided with an individual during takeoff at Denver International Airport on Friday night. This incident forced the crew to halt the departure and evacuate all passengers directly onto the runway. The collision also ignited an engine fire after the victim was reportedly drawn partially into one of the engines. The event involved Frontier Flight 4345 and occurred around 11:19 p.m. local time, as confirmed by airport officials. At the time of the incident, there were 231 individuals on board, including crew members. Audio from air traffic control captured the chaos in the cockpit as the pilots communicated with the tower.

In the audio shared from air traffic control, the pilot reported, “Tower, Frontier 4345, we're stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody... we have an engine fire.” When controllers inquired about the number of people on board, the crew responded, “We have 231 souls on board... There was an individual walking across the runway.”

Evacuation Amid Smoke and Fire Runway Evacuation Amid Smoke And Engine Fire

The situation escalated rapidly after the aircraft halted. Shortly after the initial communication, the crew informed controllers that smoke was affecting the aircraft, necessitating an evacuation. The pilot stated, “We've got smoke on the aircraft, we're gonna evacuate on the runway.” Passengers were evacuated onto the tarmac as emergency teams rushed to the scene. Videos shared online depicted travelers standing near the runway while firefighters and airport personnel surrounded the aircraft under flashing emergency lights.

The Denver Fire Department confirmed that the fire was extinguished shortly after their arrival. Although all passengers were medically assessed as part of standard procedures following the incident, at least one individual sustained a minor injury during the evacuation. Authorities have yet to publicly identify the person who was struck, and crucially, they have not clarified how the individual accessed an active runway at one of the busiest airports in the United States.

Ongoing Federal Investigation Federal Investigation Underway

This incident has prompted simultaneous investigations by airport authorities, local law enforcement, and federal transportation officials. In a statement released overnight, Denver International Airport announced that Runway 17L would remain closed while investigators analyze the scene and the events leading to the collision. The National Transportation Safety Board has been informed and is expected to lead the inquiry into the operational circumstances surrounding the incident. The Denver Police Department is assisting but has refrained from further comments as the investigation is still active.

This runway breach is likely to renew scrutiny on airport perimeter security measures and surveillance around active taxiways and departure corridors. For aviation authorities, the pressing question is not only how the collision occurred but also how an individual could reach the path of a departing commercial aircraft without being noticed.
