When you're the wealthiest person on the planet with a net worth hovering around $700 billion, you'd expect a mansion with sprawling grounds, marble columns, and maybe a few helicopters parked out front. Elon Musk has something different.

The billionaire SpaceX CEO rents the property from SpaceX for approximately $50,000. The home sits just a stone's throw from SpaceX's Starbase facility near Brownsville, Texas, right at the edge of where rockets launch toward Mars.
Back in 2020, Musk made a deliberate decision to sell off five grand homes and downsize to this spartan setup. As his biographer Walter Isaacson described it in a social media post, "In 2020, Musk decided to sell his five grand houses and to have as his primary residence be this spartan two-bedroom house in Boca Chica, TX, where we would meet and he would sit at this wood table and make phone calls."
The home itself tells you everything about Musk's priorities. It's got two bedrooms, which Musk later expanded to three by converting the garage, a fully equipped kitchen with dual sinks and standard appliances. The living area pulls double duty as both an entertainment zone and sleeping space.

During an appearance on the Full Send podcast, Musk admitted that guests are often shocked by where he actually lives.
The New York Times reported that Musk did purchase multiple properties in Austin for $35 million in late 2024, reportedly for family use. But his primary residence remains that spartan space in Boca Chica.
His housing situation perfectly encapsulates the contradiction at the heart of who Elon Musk is: absurdly wealthy yet seemingly indifferent to the trappings of wealth, singularly focused on the next goal, and willing to live in whatever space allows him to pursue it. For a billionaire, that space happens to be 400 square feet.
