Traditional handicrafts of Maharashtra

Solapur chaddar

Solapur chaddar is a traditional cotton bedspread woven in Solapur and recognised for its durable fabric, breathable texture and geometric patterns. The craft holds a GI tag and remains one of Maharashtra’s most recognised textile traditions.

Puneri pagadi

The Puneri pagadi represents cultural pride and identity in Maharashtra, especially in Pune. Known for its structured folds and bright colours, the traditional headgear has also received GI recognition.

Paithani sarees

Paithani sarees are among Maharashtra’s most celebrated handwoven textiles. Originating from Paithan over 2,000 years ago, these silk sarees are admired for their rich zari borders, vibrant shades and traditional motifs including peacocks, flowers and lotuses.

Hupari silver craft

Hupari near Kolhapur is known for handcrafted silver jewellery made by local artisan communities. The craft is especially famous for anklets and traditional ornaments featuring intricate floral and nature-inspired designs.

Kavdi maal of Tuljapur

Kavdi maal is a garland made using cowrie shells and is closely associated with devotees visiting the Tulja Bhavani temple in Tuljapur. It holds strong religious and cultural significance in the region.

Karvath kati sarees

Known for their signature zig-zag borders, Karvath kati sarees showcase traditional Maharashtrian weaving styles. These sarees are available in cotton and silk varieties and are valued for their timeless appeal.

Sawantwadi wooden craft

Sawantwadi is famous for lacquered wooden toys, colourful handmade products and traditional Ganjifa playing cards. The craft reflects the region’s long-standing artistic and woodworking heritage.

Pen Ganesh idol

Pen in Maharashtra is widely recognised for its handcrafted Ganesh idols made by skilled artisans. Many of these idols are created using eco-friendly clay and natural colours during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

Miraj tanpura

The Miraj tanpura, an important part of Hindustani classical music traditions, is crafted since 170 years. Crafted with precision, the instrument is valued for its rich sound quality and tonal balance used in vocal and instrumental performances.
