Greater Noida: Travelers from Delhi to Agra and eastern Uttar Pradesh may soon have to pay higher tolls on the Yamuna Expressway. The company managing the expressway has submitted a proposal to the government seeking a 3.5% increase in toll rates. If approved, cars, buses, trucks, and other commercial vehicles will face steeper charges in the coming days.

The operating company cited rising expenses for maintenance, road safety, patrolling, technical surveillance, and repairs as key reasons behind the proposed hike.

While tolls have remained unchanged since last year, the agreement governing the expressway allows for annual toll revisions, making the increase a formal requirement.

YEIDA officials clarified that the proposal is currently under review, and new rates will only come into effect after official approval from the Uttar Pradesh state government.

Spanning approximately 165 km, the Yamuna Expressway is now Uttar Pradesh’s busiest high-speed corridor, witnessing over 50,000 vehicles daily. The route’s importance is set to grow, with traffic expected to surge due to the upcoming Jewar International Airport and additional expressways connecting the region.

The expressway is already integrated with the Lucknow-Agra, Bundelkhand, and Bareilly Expressways. In the future, it will also link with the Ganga Expressway and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, making it a critical hub in North India’s transport network. Experts predict that traffic will increase dramatically once the Jewar Airport becomes operational, fueled by passengers, cargo trucks, and commercial activities.

Currently, three major toll plazas operate on the expressway at Jewar, Mathura, and Agra, with charges varying by vehicle type and distance. Light vehicles, including cars and jeeps, pay around ₹2.95 per km, while buses and trucks are charged higher rates.

Under the proposed revision, all vehicle categories are expected to face increased tolls, potentially impacting daily commuters, transport operators, and freight costs, which could ripple through commodity prices across the region.
