If you own an old Kindle, it might be time to consider buying a new one. Amazon announced last month that it was ending support for some ageing models and that deadline will kick in later this week. In fact, May 20, 2026, is the date set for e-readers such as the Kindle 5 and the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen to no longer be able to download any new books from Amazon's store.

Owners won't lose access to books they already own, as existing libraries will remain available. However, once the deadline arrives in the coming days, the affected Kindles will effectively become "read-only" devices.

HERE IS THE FULL LIST OF AFFECTED DEVICES

Kindle 1st Generation (2007)

Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)

Kindle Keyboard (2010)

Kindle 4 (2011)

Kindle Touch (2011)

Kindle 5 (2012)

Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

Explaining more, Amazon told Express.co,uk, "Starting May 20, 2026, customers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.

"These models have been supported for at least 14 years - some as long as 18 years - but technology has come a long way in that time, and these devices will no longer be supported moving forward."

It's a blow for those still happily using these Kindles, but Amazon is trying to soften the nightmare of losing book access.

The company is currently notifying customers whose devices are affected and is offering 20 percent off selected new Kindle models along with a £15 eBook credit.

There are, of course, plenty of new Kindles to choose from, with Amazon now offering standard models along with Colorsoft devices that feature a colour screen.

Those wanting more than just a way to access books might want to check out the Scribe range which all come with a digital pen for writing notes, annotating docunnents and marking up books.
