In Sanatan Dharma, Kashi city of Uttar Pradesh is considered the city of salvation. It is believed that after death any person attains salvation in this Kashi. Panchkoshi pilgrimage starts in Kashi in the month of Adhikamas of the year. According to religious beliefs, devotees get salvation by doing Panchkoshi Yatra. This year this yatra has started from 17th May, which will end on 15th June.
Panchkoshi Yatra starts from Manikarnika Ghat of Kashi. After that the devotees visit five religious places. These places are Kardameshwar, Bhimchandi, Rameshwar, Shivpur and Kapildhara temples, where many people visit on foot. These five stops are located on a route approximately 84 kilometers long. Now the question arises that what is the mythological story to this journey, as well as what is the significance of each stop in the pilgrimage.
During the Panchkoshi Yatra of Kashi, devotees first go to Manikarnika Ghat. After that five different temples are visited. This journey lasts for five days, in which many devotees walk 84 kilometers. However, people who have trouble walking can also undertake this journey by car.
In this yatra, devotees first go to the Kardameshwar temple, which is considered the gateway to the yatra. People visit Mahadev in this temple. After that the second temple is Bhimchandi. Mother Bhimchandi is present in this temple, where people go and worship with devotion.
After this, the third stop of the journey is Rameshwar Temple. There is a belief about this temple that Lord Rama had come here and established Shivalinga. The fourth stop of the journey is Shivpur. There is a belief about this place that five Pandavas had established Shivalinga here. Devotees come here to have darshan of this Shivalinga. The last stop of this journey is Kapildhara, which is situated near the Varuna River.
According to mythological beliefs, once King Dashrath had gone to the forest for hunting. Shravan Kumar died due to the attack of King Dasharatha in the forest, after which Shravan Kumar’s parents cursed him. When King Dasharatha’s elder son Ram came to know about this curse, he traveled to Panchkoshi so that King Dasharatha could get freedom from the curse.
