There is an interesting story from the history of technology behind the term "computer bug." Surprisingly, the word "bug" in this context originated not from a virus, but from an actual insect. The world's first computer bug was discovered on September 9, 1947, but notably, it was not a typical software bug. You might be surprised to learn that it was a real insect causing hardware malfunctions in the computer system.

Here is the full story of what happened:

Computer scientist Grace Hopper recorded this first instance of a bug. When her colleagues at Harvard opened up the hardware to investigate the cause of errors in the computer system, they were shocked to find an insect trapped inside. To fix the problem, the machine had to be "debugged." Not only was the system repaired, but Hopper also taped the insect into her logbook.

According to the National Museum of American History, engineers working on the Mark II computer at Harvard University in 1947 found an insect trapped in one of the components. They taped the insect into their logbook and labeled it a "bug." Subsequently, the terms "bug" and "debug" quickly became common parlance among computer programmers. The Mark II was not compact like modern computer systems; it was massive in size and contained numerous mechanical relays (switches) and wires.

In fact, the computer had suddenly stopped working that day and kept throwing up errors. The entire team was baffled by this sudden malfunction. Upon investigation, they discovered a moth trapped inside. The insect had caused a short circuit, leading to a system failure. After the insect (bug) was removed (de-bugged), the process of fixing errors in a computer system came to be known as "debugging."
