Ben Stokes' absence was the big news from the 1574 list of players that have registered for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction scheduled to take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah. Stokes will miss the mega tournament for the second year in a row having missed the 2024 season too. However, Stokes will have to pay a heavy price for not registering for the 2025 auction and he will now be banned from playing the IPL next season too. The England Test captain cannot feature in the IPL or be part of the auction till the 2027 season. This is because of a new regulation introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) while announcing the rules of the 2025 IPL Player retentions. Any overseas player that has not registered for the mega auction is not eligible for next year's auction either. "Any Overseas Player will have to register for the Big Auction. In case the overseas player doesn't register, then he will be ineligible to register in the following year’s player auction," said BCCI.

Why Did BCCI Introduce This Rule?Over the year, a trend was seen of players missing the mega auction and coming into the fold for the mini auction and earning big bucks. Stokes was a big benifitary himself having skipper the 2022 mega auction but earned a whopping Rs. 16.25 crore in the 2023 mini auction after a successful bid from Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Stokes' first-ever IPL contract came through the 2017 IPL mini auction when Rising Pune SuperGiant (RPSG) purchased him for Rs. 14.25 crore. Despite a dream debut season, he was sold to Rajasthan Royals (RR) for only Rs. 12.5 crore in the 2018 mega auction.Pat Cummins' was sold for Rs. 15.5 crore to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2021 mini auction and Rs. 20.5 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2024 mini auction. However, he was sold for just Rs. 7.25 crore to KKR in the 2022 mega auction. However, it is worth noting Stokes can play the 2027 season when he will enter the mix through a mini auction only. The BCCI has also revealed that any player who is picked at the auction but makes himself unavailable for the season will be banned for the next two years from playing or being part of the auction.
