The has been a source of gossip, rumour and titillation for centuries. But perhaps no more so than the last 50 years, especially with newspapers, TV and now the internet never missing a single slip-up.

We’ve had royal affairs, scandals, embarrassing relations and bizarre moments it would have been hard to even make up.

Picking her most controversial royal moments, remembers her disbelief at picking up a copy of the Daily in August 1992.

We'd published photos showing the Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, who had just announced her separation from Prince Andrew, topless and having her toes sucked by her financial adviser in a French holiday villa.

Royal commentator Jennie recalls: “In August 1992 I’d taken a couple of weeks off to have a little rest.

“And the phone went at 5am telling me they needed me in the office straight away. I couldn't believe it. It was crazy.

“It was utter humiliation for the Duchess of York. She was at Balmoral that day, and she went down to breakfast and everyone had the papers in front of them, all laid out. And she was profoundly embarrassed, and was summoned by the Queen, with whom she had always got on very well. And in her own words, Sarah's own words, the Queen was absolutely livid with her.

“It was utter humiliation for Fergie, and she didn't really recover from that, not for a very long time anyway.”

Of course, it wasn't the last time the Royal family's shenanigans have caused gasps of disbelief.

Fast-forward over 30 years and ’s autobiography Spare ensured even more controversy. Jennie says the book - in which he outlines his grievances and bitterness with his family - was "as explosive as it gets".

She says: “It was jaw dropping. Every page contained new drama. He just wanted to get his side of it out, but it was so profoundly hurtful. And I think it was in Spare that he crossed the red line with his father and with his brother.

His vitriolic remarks about Camilla and unkind remarks about Catherine really cut his brother and father to the quick. And that’s the root of his irreparable rift with William.

"It was a bombshell. Every chapter of that book there were new accusations, and we learned so much about Harry, Harry's mind and how he was thinking. And also how he misremembered things, as there were several instances when he got things plain wrong.

"So in the end, perhaps he proved that his grandmother was right when she said ‘recollections may vary’.”

Intruder sneaks into Queen’s bedroom (July 9, 1982)

Michael Fagan created one of Britain’s biggest ever security scandals when he broke into and spent 10 minutes talking to the Queen as she sat in bed. When he asked for a cigarette she calmly called for a footman who held the intruder until police arrived.

It’s A Royal Knockout (June 19, 1987)

One of the most bizarre pieces of royal television ever to be broadcast, the special featured senior royals such as Prince Edward and the Princess Royal in fancy dress duelling with celebrities like Barbara Windsor and .

Tampongate (January 17, 1993)

A six-minute phone call between Charles and Camilla was released by the Sunday Mirror in which the prince, still married to Diana, expressed his wish to be a tampon so he could be closer to Camila.

Prince Harry Nazi costume scandal (January 13, 2005)

Harry was engulfed in controversy after pictures emerged of him wearing a swastika armband to a fancy dress party. He later wrote in his autobiography that it was “one of the biggest mistakes of my life”.

Prince Charles Bad-Mouths Nicholas Witchell (March 30, 2005)

Clearly irritated at having to answer press questions while enjoying a family ski trip at Klosters with William and Harry, Charles was caught on microphones muttering about the BBC royal reporter: “Bloody people. I can’t bear that man. He’s so awful. He really is.”

Fergie cash for access scandal (May 23, 2010)

The Duchess of York was filmed offering to sell access to her ex-husband Prince Andrew, then a UK trade envoy, for £500,000. She told the uncover reporter posing as a business tycoon: “I can open any door you want”.

Prince Harry naked Las Vegas photos (August 23, 2012)

US gossip website TMZ published photos of the pierce cavorting stark naked during a game of strip billiards at a hotel in the Las Vegas strip, including one in which he is seen hugging a naked woman from behind.

Prince Andrew’s car-crash interview with Emily Maitlis (November 16, 2019)

An attempt to save his reputation over his friendship with sex offender made him look worse and resulted in the prince stepping back from royal duties days later.
