For its flagship low-carbon hydrogen production plant (HPP1) at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, Essar Energy Transition (EET) Hydrogen and ENKA inked an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract on Wednesday.

At the core of the HyNet Cluster, HPP1 is the first large-scale low-carbon hydrogen project in the UK, and the UK government announced in October 2024 that financing had been secured to finance it.

With a 350MW output capacity, HPP1 will absorb around 600,000 tons of CO2 annually, which is the same as removing about 250,000 automobiles off the road.

The HPP1 project, the UK hydrogen industry, the HyNet Cluster, and EET Hydrogen’s advancement towards its objective of creating 4GW of low-carbon hydrogen production for industrial companies in the North West of England to decarbonize their operations, preserving jobs and promoting economic growth, all mark significant milestones.

Located in Istanbul, Turkey, ENKA is a multinational engineering and construction company that is one of the most valued brands in the nation.

With a focus on engineering and construction, power generation, real estate, and commerce, ENKA is best known in the UK for building its flagship projects, the Shotton Mill Paper Mill Factory in Flintshire and the Hinkley Point Power Plant in Somerset.

“We are thrilled to announce this important contract with ENKA after a very competitive tender process,” said Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen. With more than 580 contracts in 57 countries, ENKA has a proven track record of successfully completing challenging projects like HPP1. We are excited to work with the team, which has a lot of expertise, as we fulfill our goal of being the leading manufacturer of low-carbon hydrogen in the UK.

ENKA’s member of the executive committee, Hakan Kozan, stated, “We are excited to collaborate with EET Hydrogen on the HPP1 project, a groundbreaking project that will be crucial to developing the UK’s low-carbon hydrogen sector and supporting international decarbonization initiatives.

As a multinational engineering and construction firm, we approach every project with knowledge, well-thought-out solutions, and a dedication to quality. Our dedication to advancing the HyNet Cluster’s goals of lowering emissions and promoting sustainable economic development is reaffirmed by this endeavor. We are eager to provide our esteemed client with a project that is both safe and successful.
