Chennai Metro: By July 2026, people in neighborhoods like Alapakkam and Karambakkam along Arcot Road will have much better commuting alternatives thanks to the Chennai Metro Rail’s double-decker route. This new section will be an essential connection between two important corridors: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur and Light House to Poonamallee.
Once finished, this cutting-edge double-decker route will run four trains concurrently. With Corridor 4 built on the lowest tier and Corridor 5 above it, the design has two levels and unifies the network for both routes.
The Chennai Metro Phase II Project would have three corridors with a total length of 118.9 kilometers.
The extensive Rs 63,246 crore Phase II Project would span 118.9 km and include three corridors: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor 5), Light House to Poonamallee (Corridor 4), and Madhavaram to SIPCOT (Corridor 3), according to the Hindu article.
A portion of Corridor 4, which runs from Poonamallee to Porur, is scheduled to open in December as part of the project’s phased rollout. By July of next year, it is anticipated that this route would have been extended to Kodambakkam, enabling commuters to switch between Phase I and Phase II networks at Vadapalani.
Chennai Metro: There will be eight stations along the Porur to Kodambakkam section.
Eight stations, including Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam, would be included in the double-decker design along the Porur to Kodambakkam route. At any of these stops, travelers on Corridor 5 would be able to transfer to Corridor 4, according to officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).
The double-decker structure’s construction has been difficult because of space constraints. “We used a special-launching girder for construction, which was difficult to transport and place on the viaduct,” a government source said. For this job, large gantry cranes were also required, particularly in confined spaces like Arcot Road. We are trying to hasten the remaining components, even though we have finished a sizable chunk.”
The completion of the stations’ construction and track installation will be the following priorities. Although there hasn’t been much progress in places like Vadapalani, authorities think the project deadlines may still be met.
