Newcastle and England left-back Lewis Hall is OUT for the rest of the season. .

The 20-year-old defender has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign for the Magpies, starring for Eddie Howe's side. But he suffered a foot injury during the the defeat by last month.

But now, after consulting a specialist over the issue, it has been decided that he needs surgery and that he won't play again until next term.

A Toon statement declared: “ United defender Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the 2024/25 season after sustaining an injury to a bone in his foot.

“Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club’s medical team. Everyone at wishes Lewis the very best with his surgery and recovery.”

The news is another blow to Newcastle boss Howe ahead of the final against Liverpool on March 16. The Magpies haven't won a piece of domestic silverware since the 1955 and will face the Premier League leaders without another Three Lions star, Anthony Gordon, who misses out through suspension after being sent off during the weekend’s FA Cup defeat by .

Howe does hope to have both Alexander Isak and Sven Botman available for the game against this weekend in the Premier League - although Hall's injury could see the Dutch defender wrapped in cotton wool ahead of the final.

“Sven Botman was close [for the Brighton match] but he did light training on Saturday and didn’t feel 100 percent confident in his body," said Howe. "So, we decided not to risk him.

“We still hope that he can play a part, either in our next game or the game after. We are desperate to get him back fit because he is such a big player. But we couldn’t take the risk with him if he wasn’t 100 percent fit.

“It was just general tiredness with Alex, a little bit of fatigue. He worked incredibly hard for us. I don’t think there is a problem. I said before the game, if he was fit, he would play. Fingers crossed he is OK.”
