Mumbai: In Hinduism, the period of Kharmas holds great significance, occurring twice a year. According to astrological calculations, Kharmas takes place when the Sun, known as the king of planets, transits into Sagittarius (Dhanu) or Pisces (Meen), both of which are ruled by Jupiter (Brihaspati). This inauspicious period lasts for approximately 30 days, during which no auspicious or ceremonial activities take place. With Kharmas approaching in March 2025, let’s explore its exact dates and the reasons behind the restrictions on auspicious events during this time.

As per the Vedic Panchang (Hindu calendar), the Sun will remain in Aquarius (Kumbh Rashi) until March 13, 2025. At 8:54 PM on the same day, it will transition into Pisces (Meen Rashi), marking the beginning of Kharmas. This period will last from March 14, 2025, to April 13, 2025.

Why Is Kharmas Considered Inauspicious?

During Kharmas, the Sun enters Sagittarius or Pisces, both ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is regarded as the planet of auspiciousness and prosperity, especially influencing marriage, business, and career- matters. However, when the Sun transits into these signs, it weakens Jupiter’s positive effects, leading to delays and obstacles in significant life events. This is why Hindu traditions discourage weddings, business ventures, and other important ceremonies during this period.

What to Avoid During Kharmas

Kharmas is traditionally considered unfavourable for conducting any auspicious rituals or events. Hindus believe that undertaking important activities during this time may not yield successful results. Some of the prohibited activities include:

  • Marriage ceremonies
  • Housewarming (Griha Pravesh)
  • Mundan (first haircut of a child)
  • Engagements and sacred thread ceremonies (Janeu Sanskar)
  • Starting a new business or professional venture
  • Naming Ceremonies (Namkaran)

Since it is believed that endeavours initiated during Kharmas may face obstacles or setbacks, people are advised to wait until the period ends before proceeding with any significant events.
