Football fans could hardly believe the star-studded punditry line-up drafted in to analyse the Sidemen Charity Match on Saturday. What the Sidemen and YouTube Allstars lacked in quality, they certainly made up for in entertainment as 90,000 spectators crammed into Wembley for an unorthodox footballing show.
The goals were a mixture of impressive, questionable and surreal as a chaotic first period finished with the teams tied up at 4-4. Given that many of the first-half snippets were a million miles from the football usually on show at Wembley, many supporters were shocked to see the level of expertise on hand in the studio.
Former England stars Emile Heskey and Jermain Defoe - both in the exclusive Premier League 100 club - were joined by Lionesses hero Eni Aluko. And it was curious to see them delve into calamitous passages of play, hapless goalkeeping and WWE-style celebrations.
Among the confused fans who flocked to social media at the interval was , who wrote on X: "Sorry why are Defoe and Heskey on a TV host panel for a YOUTUBE CHARITY MATCH????"
Their head was not the only one scrambled, as wrote: "Sidemen with Defoe, Aluko and Heskey as their punditry panel is sending me [laughing emoji]."
Elsewhere, chimed in with: "Having a proper commentary team on the Sideman Charity match has me in stitches. Having Defoe and Heskey comparing kids that bark to professionals [laughing emoji]."
Along similar lines, said: "Defoe and Heskey as the analysts [crying emoji]." Then wrote: "I just tuned into the Sidemen Charity Match and they got full pundits [crying emojis]. Defoe, Heskey and Aluko." And added: "Seeing Defoe and Heskey commentating on a Sidemen match is just something I never think about [laughing emoji]."
After Defoe, Heskey and Aluko had given their two pennies' worth, a drawn-out half-time show featured musical performances from AJ Tracey and KSI.
Some huge online personalities were drafted in for the Sidemen's sixth charity match, having won four of the previous five. Competing against the usual Sidemen suspects were well-known figures such as IShowSpeed, Mr Beast, Angry Ginge, Kai Cenat and Chunkz.
Tickets for the match went on sale last November and had completely sold out within just three hours.
