Mumbai: The month of Chaitra holds immense significance in Hinduism. According to religious beliefs, it was during this month that Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, began the process of creation. In 2025, Chaitra month began on 14th March and will continue until 12th April. This period is marked by several important festivals and fasts, including Chaitra Navratri, Sheetala Ashtami, Rang Panchami, and Papmochini Ekadashi. Additionally, the Hindu New Year also commences in this month, making it a sacred period for worshipping Goddess Jagdamba, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi.

As per Hindu scriptures, there are certain activities that are considered forbidden during Chaitra. It is believed that indulging in these prohibited acts may lead to difficulties and obstacles in one’s life. Here’s a look at what should and should not be done during this holy month.

Observing the right practices during Chaitra is believed to bring prosperity and peace. Here are some key things to do:

What to Avoid During Chaitra Month

  • Avoid Tamasic and Non-Vegetarian Food – Consumption of meat, alcohol, and tamasic (impure) foods is believed to displease Goddess Lakshmi.

  • Avoid Eating Stale Food – Consuming stale food is considered inauspicious and can negatively impact health.
  • Limit Dairy Products – Reducing intake of milk and curd is advised during this time.
  • Do Not Cut Hair or Nails – As per tradition, cutting hair or nails in Chaitra can lead to financial difficulties in the household.
  • Avoid Conflicts – Quarrels, especially between spouses, should be avoided to maintain harmony.
  • Say No to Intoxicants – Consumption of alcohol or any kind of substance abuse is strictly discouraged.
  • Refrain from Using Leather Items – Avoiding leather products is believed to be spiritually beneficial.
