New Delhi: The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) marks a significant turning point in Hardik Pandya’s career, completing a full-circle journey after the turbulent 2024 season. During that year, Mumbai Indians’ decision to appoint him as captain while leaving Rohit Sharma out sparked widespread frustration among fans, particularly at the Wankhede Stadium.

Throughout the 2024 season, Hardik faced constant booing from the crowd at nearly every turn—whether it was during the toss when he went to bat, or as he took the ball. The mood within the Mumbai Indians camp was strained, and their poor finish at the bottom of the standings was particularly hard to accept, given the wealth of talent on their team.

However, Hardik’s fortunes changed after the 2024 IPL season concluded. He played an instrumental part in guiding India to victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup. His emotional return with the trophy at Mumbai airport was a moment to remember, and the enthusiastic reception from the Mumbai crowd during the celebration was truly special. His contributions were also crucial in India’s recent triumph at the 2025 Champions Trophy.

During a recent press conference for the 2025 IPL season, Hardik was questioned by a reporter about being considered the team’s most crucial player. Flashing a playful smile, the Mumbai Indians captain acknowledged the statement.

He also delivered an uplifting message to the people of Mumbai and the team’s supporters, urging them to remain loyal and ensure that only the team’s colours are seen at the Wankhede Stadium.

“When I go out to bat, cheer for me, when I hit a six, cheer for me. When I go out for toss, cheer for me. I don’t want to see any colour other than our colour (at the Wankhede Stadium). That’s all that I wish for,” said Hardik.

Mumbai Indians (MI) will begin their 2025 season with a thrilling clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, March 23rd. Regrettably, Hardik will not be part of the squad as he is serving a one-match suspension due to three slow over-rate offenses during the 2024 season.
