High uric acid is a common problem, which is causing trouble for many people these days. The increasing level of uric acid in the body causes many serious problems. Especially since it has a bad effect on the kidneys, about which people often know very little.

The level of uric acid in the body has a direct effect on the functioning of the kidney. In such a situation, today in this article we will tell you how high uric acid affects the kidney and how to prevent it-

Kidney Stone

Hyperuricemia i.e. high uric acid causes crystals to form, which can accumulate in the joints, causing gout (a type of arthritis). These crystals can also accumulate in the kidneys, causing kidney stones (Kidney Damage Prevention Tips). Stones caused by uric acid account for about 5-10% of all kidney stones. These stones can obstruct the urinary tract, causing severe pain, hematuria (blood in urine), and possible kidney damage.

Uric acid crystals

Increased levels of uric acid in the body lead to the formation of crystal deposits. These crystals are formed due to several reasons, including low urine pH, dehydration, and a diet high in purines. When urine is more acidic, it promotes the crystallization of uric acid, increasing the risk of stone formation.

Chronic kidney disease

Chronic hyperuricemia is a major cause of the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some studies have shown that high uric acid contributes to impaired kidney functioning by promoting inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis in kidney tissues. Over time, this can lead to a decline in kidney function and the development of CKD.

How to prevent it

Managing hyperuricemia and reducing its impact on kidney health involves both lifestyle changes and medications.

Dietary changes, such as avoiding purine-rich foods (organ meats, shellfish) and alcohol, may help lower uric acid levels.

Drinking plenty of water is also important to dilute the uric acid in the urine, reducing the chance of crystal formation.

In more severe cases, urate-lowering medications may be taken to reduce uric acid production or increase its excretion. These medications may prevent the formation of uric acid crystals and the development of kidney stones.
